The History of Brighton Michigan
The city of Brighton MI was established in 1832! The first settler who founded the town is said to be Eiljah Fitch, who named it after the town his father resided. Brighton, in Monroe County New York is what Brighton MI can attribute its name to.
Elijah set up general store which he named “Brighton House.” There he sold products and provided a resting place for travelers. The Maltby brothers were among some of the other notable settlers. They acquired land in Livingston County and brought their wives from New York to settle the new area. They also constructed the sawmill on Ore Creek.
Being somewhat of a middle point between Detroit and Lansing, Brighton MI was known for it’s hotels and inns. It provided the resting point on the trip from the larger cities.
